God is my conscience, Jesus lives in my heart… this blog is about what I see, what I think, what I do and how I serve God

Stump The Pastor: What is the definition of Scripture? How do I know what writings are or are not Scripture?

The canon of the Old and New Testaments are the only source of truth about God that has withstood the test of time and were confirmed as authoritative. The canon of Hebrew Scriptures (the Old Testament) was closed at the council of Jewish Rabbis at Jamnia around 90 C.E. The canon of the New Testament was a subject of debate from around 100 C.E. until 382 C.E when Bishop Athanasius, the metropolitan of Alexandria, included it in a letter sent to all the churches under his supervision. Athanasius’ influence was so great that his canon was accepted as authoritative by the synod of Rome in 382 and confirmed by papal declaration of the year 405.
