Praying without Ceasing – A Call for Seven Days of Prayer

We invite you to be in prayer for the people of God, as the children of the Creator come together glorify the Holy One. A gathering of God’s people is June 5-7, 2014. The Peninsula – Delaware Annual Conference convenes at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, Maryland.  Let us come together in preparation for our gathering, as we pray together for one another. Seven days of praying without ceasing, as we call on the Lord to: Heal God’s World: Physically and Spiritually.

Words of Assurance:

Friends, be confident! The one who began a good work within you and among us will bring it to completion on the day of Jesus Christ.

Scripture: John 5:1-9Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

5 After this there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2 Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Bethzatha which has five porticoes. 3 In these lay many invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. 5 One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Stand up, take your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk. Now that day was a Sabbath.

Devotion: Stand Up Today

Now that you have the power to stand up, take up your mat and walk. Stand up today. Stand up from the pain of poverty; stand up from the ridicule of racism, stand up from the destructive forces of discrimination—and walk! Take up your mat as a testimony. Tell somebody that no matter what may knock us down in this world, Jesus has the power to lift us back up. Drugs can’t keep us down. Unemployment can’t keep us down. Family tensions can’t keep us down. The risen Jesus will pick us up. Walk, my friends! Walk with power! Walk with authority.

Walk today in the confidence that the Resurrected One will take care of you! Stand up, take up your mat, and walk! Amen.

Leadership Prayer:

Lord God,

When we exercise leadership, help us to rely not only on our own natural skills and abilities. Help us not to focus on ourselves. Help us not to brag or have a bad attitude, but trust you. Thank you Jesus, who loved us so much that you led the way to the cross, so that we would be made right with and become alive in all that we do. Lord God, we ask that our leadership not point to ourselves but to the grace and love of Jesus Christ. Amen.
